Chennai’s IT Corridor Gets Its First Full-Fledged Mall

chennaiSuryavardhan Estates, a joint venture by the promoters of Tarapore & Company, which has built several landmarks in Chennai and other cities, and Mangal Tirth Estate, that promoted Chennai’s Spencer’s Plaza, have just completed the construction of the first full-fledged mall on OMR.

Coromandel Plaza, the mall, is now ready for leasing. In fact, a four-screen multiplex, AGS Cinemas, has already started functioning in the mall early this month.

OMR, Chennai’s IT Corridor, has witnessed the newest and tallest buildings, IT Parks, residential towers and five star hotels. To augment the above features, there is a distinct requirement for a retail and leisure destination. Coromandel Plaza is the first mall on OMR, located at the epicentre of this region. Taking into account the high salaried individuals here, the presence of IT Parks, residential developments, schools, colleges, hotels and hospitals, it is evident that OMR will continue to grow exponentially, the company said in a statement.

“OMR has been booming with the increase in various IT Parks and residential complexes, making it a city by itself. Realising that organised retail market is on the increase, we are the earliest players to provide the complete experience of shopping, leisure and entertainment all under one roof,” says N Radhakrishnan, director, Suryavardhan Estates.

Unlike Chennai city, OMR has no high street shopping area and is home to individuals with high disposable incomes and aspirations. The mall, which will offer a total area of three lakh sq ft, will cater to this segment of people, who are looking for convenience and class, all under one roof. The mall’s linear design, which centres round the atrium, ensures 100 per cent visibility for every retail outlet on each floor.

“The mall is well zoned, offering a varied tenant mix. Besides the 1,500 seater multiplex, the mall will also have a hypermarket, food court, fine dining restaurants, family entertainment areas, department stores and several designer stores,” says Vijay Sadarangani, director, Suryavardhan Estates.

“While designing the mall, we have taken into account the multitude requirements of the visitors. Some of these features provided in Coromandel Plaza include Wi-Fi throughout the mall as well as internet browsing facility, toilets for the handicapped, wheel chairs, free baby strollers, car calling facility, ATMs and VIP parking,” says Mitu Sadarangani, another director with Suryavardhan Estates.
