KHADI GRAMODYOG
BHAVAN
Started
in 1957, the Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan functions with the laudable
objective of providing a channel to village artisans to sell their
products. In this process, it also helps bring out latent talent,
thereby boosting morale in several cottage industries.
The products sold at the Bhavan are procured through Khadi Village
Industries Commission's (KVIC) approved units. The KVIC
fixes a margin and the Bhavan runs on a "no loss-no-gain basis".
The products sold at the Bhavan are all handmade. Its wide collection
of handicrafts made out of rosewood, sandalwood and season wood,
fascinates the visitors. For
decorative items like Tanjore plates, papier mache dolls and sculpture
made out of blue metal and white marble, khadi material and silk
sarees, the Bhavan is amongst the most sought after spots in the
city.
The most preferred consumer products are ghee and gurukanni
honey. Besides these products, the Bhavan has recently started a
separate unit for Ayurveda, Siddha and Naturopathy medicines.
These medicines are procured from pharmacies approved by the KVIC.
Agarbathis (incense sticks) purchased from Aurobindo Ashram
in Pondicherry and Neem soap from KVIC-approved units have found
a niche in the international market too.

KIPLING
AND CO.
Showcasing
colonial classic furniture and interesting antiques from all over
the country, Kipling and Co. was set up to make Indian heritage
furniture available to all. The furniture collection includes both
old furniture and reproductions made from old wood. The reproductions
are focussed on the export market and viewed mainly from a historical
perspective and the view of craftsmanship.
The library-cum-bookshop on the first floor has antiquarian books,
reprints of old classics and coffee table books.
A
collaborative partnership between Subramanian Gomathi, Patrick
Davenport and Martin Graham, Kipling and Co. is a coming
together of kindred souls. The trio have carefully handpicked the
collection that is showcased, from their travels all over India.
The furniture from the North is mostly crafted woods such as shisham,
saal, aam and Indian teak. The South Indian collection leans more
towards rosewood and teak from India and Burma and a few rare pieces
from wood of the jack tree. The shop also has small gift items ranging
from ceramics to glass to wrought iron, both old and new.
A second showroom is being planned in Delhi.
