If you are looking for reason to go to the brand new gallery, situated
in the quite lanes of Santhome High Road heres one. Heidi
Langes African Art.
The
black tie-and-dye screen prints on cotton clothes are gorgeous.
But first things first: If you are looking for Rimari, you
are not going to find it. For Rimari is tucked inside the smart
looking RNIS College of Insurance premises. Another brand
new and thus relatively unknown place.Rimari is actually a corporate
art center which sources the works of lesser-known artists and sells
them to corporate houses and hotels besides art lovers. Also, apart
from maintaining a standard stock-works of various artists in different
media and themes, it also researches themes as per the specification
of the clients.Ritu Nanda owns the gallery. USP is art at
an affordable cost.
Forget the technical details, what is impressive about Heidi Langes
work is the intricate detailing. Be it Zulu Mother (Rs.8000/-),
Sambaru Girl (Rs.7000/-) or a Suk Dancer (Rs.16000/-)
her simple black and white work of art is an exquisite portrayal
of details. For instance, the elaborate headgear of the Mombassa
Girl (Rs.5000/-) is, to use a clichéd phrase, breathtaking.
That the paintings are a result of Langes fascination with
Africa is obvious. For we meet the different tribes, the men and
women of Africa. Long slender neck, blunt nose, thick lips, exotic
flowers and magnificent headgears-it all for everyone to see.
At Rimari, they have sourced about 52 paintings of Heidi Langes,
all displayed in their full splendour. Despite the gallerys
low profile, they have managed to sell one-easily the delightful
one of them all, titled Girl with Butterfly and priced at
Rs.8000/-.The works are priced anywhere in the range of Rs.4000/-
and Rs.20000/-.
Address: Rimari, No: 161, Santhome High Road, R.A.Puram,
Chennai 600 028.
