  List of Art Galleries

Vinyasa the leading art gallery of Chennai, in a short span of four years has become the central place for art lovers in Chennai. The brainchild of Viji Nagashwaran, who is an artist in her own right, Vinyasa is located inside The Music Academy premises. The Gallery has over the years acquired an excellent reputation for quality, variety and fair price of the art works.

Vinyasa Art GalleryVinyasa prides with the largest collection of art works of artists from all over the country. Prabha, Gurucharan Singh, Adimoolam, Achutan, Ravi Mullick, Shiv Prasad, Yusuf Arakkal and Ashok Bowmick are just few of the illustrious names that Vinyasa boasts of. It has recently expanded and has additional space for wider display. The Gallery is spread over two floors, over a total area of 1500 square feet. It offers an excellent ambience, partly air conditioned for art lovers comfort and for experiencing the beauty of art in a relaxed atmosphere.

According to Viji, she started Vinyasa accidentally. "It was accidental. I am a painter myself and there was this extra space in the mezzanine floor of my husband's office in Wellington plaza, which I thought could be used as an art gallery. Initially, I exhibited some of my works along with the works of a few other artists, and later I started letting the place out to other people who wanted to exhibit their works free of cost. Slowly it started picking up and a lot of people started showing interest in the gallery".

Paintings at VinyasaAnd how did it come to be housed in the Music Academy Premises? Well, Viji brought a few artists from Mumbai to exhibit their works in Chennai, for which she hired the then 'Spirit of Freedom Hall' at the Music Academy premises and got a good response for that exhibition. Since the hall was not really being used for any other purpose, she asked T T Vasu, the President of the Music Academy, whether she could hire the premises for starting an art gallery, to which he readily agreed and so Vinyasa came to be housed in the place that it currently is.

As part of its endeavour to reach art to all, the Gallery offers Paintings, Drawings, Sculptures and Prints by various artists, right from Rs 50/- onwards!

Apart from private buyers, Vinyasa is also patronised by corporate buyers. Among corporates that have gone in for bulk buying are The Hindu and The World Bank. About the level of awareness and appreciation of art in Chennai today, Viji has this to say, "more and more people are coming into the gallery each year. The response is really encouraging. Its not only the upper class which is patronising Vinayasa. A number of people from the middle class are also wanting to buy art. Since we have all ranges selling, everyone can pick up a work of art today".
