One of the oldest associations in the country, the Motor Vehicles
and Allied Industries Association (MV & AIA) was founded
in 1926. It represents manufacturers and dealers of automobiles
and automobile ancillaries, oil companies, tyre manufacturers and
dealers, insurance and hire purchase companies, road transport operators
and other organisations connected with the automobile and road transport
industry. Having completed 75 years on 23rd April
2001, the association celebrated its Platinum Jubilee earlier this
year.
MV
& AIA was formed by a group of prominent businessmen in the
works office of Simpson and Company, at Mount Road on 23rd
April 1926. Sir Alexander Mc Doughall from Simpson
and Company Limited, H E Gow from Oakes Ltd, F
G Luker from Addison and Company Limited, Kabardhar
Senior and Kabardhar Junior from Patel and Company
Limited and F D Growchery from Fiat Motors Company
came together to form the association, which was then named
as the Madras Motor Vehicle and Motor Cycle Importers Association.
Three years later, the Association was re-christened as Motor
Vehicles and Allied Merchants Association to make its activities
more meaningful and useful to the members. This was before Independence,
when the British ruled the country. The association was then
incorporated under the Companies Act in 1938 and registered under
the seal of the Assistant Registrar of Joint Stock Companies,
Madras City, as The Madras Motor Vehicles and Allied Merchants
Association.
MV & AIA has been recognised by the Central and State Governments
and has been given representation to the following bodies - the
Regional Advisory Committee of the Madras Central Excise
Collectorate, Sales Tax Advisory Committee and the Standing
Committee on Manufacture and Distribution of Transport Vehicles
Accessories and Fuel.
In its 75 years of existence, the Association has established itself
as an effective mouthpiece of the automobile and allied industries
in the Southern Region. Recognition by the State and Central
Governments and close liaison with various trade Associations and
Chambers of Commerce and Industries has helped it in all its activities.
The
Association publishes and issues to its members, a monthly newsletter
to serve as a compendium of useful and current information on all
aspects of automobile and allied industries. The newsletter
also contains orders and notifications issued by the Central and
State Governments, that may be of interest to members. It
also publishes statistics of automobile production, registration
and population. A digest of judicial decisions on income tax,
sales tax, labour disputes and details of company laws, labour laws,
motor vehicles act and other allied subjects are also given.
The Association has instituted an award "Best Student Award
of Automobile Engineering", in 1967. The award is to be
given every year to a Final Year Student of Madras Institute
of Technology, Chrompet.

all the association connected with automobile trade, and industry
in Tamil Nadu. MV & AIA is also to be credited with taking
the initiative to form the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association
(FADA) along with three other regional associations.
