Positioned
as the oldest bookshop in India, Higginbothams was started
in 1844, when Abel Joshua Higginbotham (the Librarian of
the Wesleyan Book Depository) set up a small shop selling
religious literature at first. The shop grew to become not only
one of the largest in the country, but also the first and last reference
point on virtually any kind of book.
Today, this retail chain (with its ever-present Railway station
stall) is known best for its academic books (for Schools, Colleges
and Higher Academics). The present marble-floored building on Mount
Road was opened in 1904. This city institution has had several celebrity
visitors - Sir Clement Atlee, C Rajagopalachari, Annadurai
and P V Narasimha Rao among others. In 1945, the Bookshop
became part of the Amalgamations Group.
