Shilpi - A haven for

Are

by Arundhati Menon and Bamini Narayanan, twenty years
back, when the concept of boutique was new to Chennai. >From a kid's
shop with 165 square feet area, Shilpi is now a name to reckon with
in Boutiques.
Block printed sarees, Hand painted sarees, Embroidery sarees -
You name it, Shilpi has it. Handloom sarees from all states of India
like Andhra, Tamilnadu, Orissa and West Bengal with their unique
pattern are on display. Arundhati says, "We used to travel at
all odd hours, trek interiors to meet the weavers, it was real fun
and hard work." She is very intent on reviving old designs,
to keep people aware of India's rich tradition. Shilpi has regular
clients from all over the world, who are besotted with the beauty
of our sarees.
It also has designer salwars, churidhars, kurtas and caftans to
please the young generation. Apart from these, household linen like
cushion covers, bedspreads, printed and handwoven bed covers are
one more specialty here. Arundhati says, one can walk in and select
their entire range of household linen. They export high quality
tablemats to Dubai, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
