The Chettinad sari, which is evocative of beauty and drama, is
making a comeback in the city.
The
traditional sari from Chettinad is called Kandanghi. These saris
are worn in the traditional style Pin Kosuvamr where the pleats
are worn on the back. The original saris are thick as they were
worn without a skirt or blouse. All worn by the women of Chettinad.
The fabric used is cotton, cotton and silk, pure silk to suite
the occasion. They are woven in vegetable colours- black, red and
yellow. It is practical reasons and not sentiments that determined
the choice of colours occasionally green and blue.
The sari is mostly with big borders with stripes and checks in
varying sizes on the body. The new collection presented by Vaisalakshi
Ramaswamy for the MRM Cultural Foundation features the original
designs with innovation in colours for contemporary everyday use.
The saris are in cotton and cotton silk. Come and be a part of
the revival.
