Located
at Anna Nagar, Loom World is a standing example of how even
a government co-operative can make huge profits if it has a focussed
marketing strategy. A showroom with a pleasant ambience, that is
both comfortable and convenient to shop at, with ample car parking
space, in one of the city’s best residential areas – a formula for
sure success. Well that is what has spelt success for the Chennai
outlet of Loom World – an aggressive marketing effort from the State
Government.
The brand name ‘Loom World’ has caught on fast and going by the
results of sales at each Loom World outlet, there seems no stopping
them. The Loom World at Anna Nagar has grossed sales of over Rs.1.25
crore and is all set to achieve this year’s target, Rs. 2.50 crore.
The
outlet has two showrooms - one for cottons and the other for silks.
Sixteen varieties of Kancheepuram silk and over 42 varieties
of cottons from throughout Tamil Nadu are stocked here. From Paramakudi
to Nagercoil, all cotton societies participate in this venture.
Bedspreads from Chennimalai in Erode district, carpets from Erode,
Sarees from Coimbatore, Paramakudi, Tirupur and Salem, poly cotton,
poly silk, kora cotton and chruridhar from different centres are
all available. Kitchen linen like aprons, gloves, tea cosy’s and
fruit baskets are also available. Shirts made of materials like
Lycra and Dubion silk are sourced from societies.
The first thing that strikes one while entering the showroom is
the warm and enthusiasm of the staff. The observation is confirmed
when one sees the guest book displayed by a proud Manager - K
Veerabadran (who happens to be a Guinness Record Holder!).
He
says that the showroom is crowded between 5.00 pm and 7.00 pm on
all days and on Fridays there is an increase in the sale of silk
sarees since it is a muhurtam (auspicious) day. He added
that the showroom had products for people with all kinds of budgets,
with cotton products from Rs.200/- to Rs.3,000/- and silk sarees
from Rs.2,000/- to Rs. 25, 000/-.
There were several appreciative remarks from foreign tourists and
others in the guest book. Leslie Grimes from the International
Justice Mission, Washington, commended "the beautiful
textiles and wonderful service", Canar Dane from
Wales, remarked about "the quality of the workmanship".
It was a beautiful piece of writing in Tamil that caught one’s attention,
because it was written by a person who is not a native of Tamil
Nadu - M Madhikeswaran, Director of the Central Planning
Commission, wrote,
