Peak summer is on. It is once again the turn of Tamil Nadu Handicraft
Development Corporation to host a special exhibition of cotton sarees
from all over the country.
The
Handicraft Corporation has set up a showroom in the popularly known
Poompuhar, which is decked with a brilliant collection of floral
and check-designed sarees, which makes the women community anxious
and wistful.
The assortment of sarees spread for public is a cynosure to the
eye. The sarees are soft and silky to touch and affordable. The
exhibition includes a wide range of handcrafted handloom and silk
sarees from Andhra Pradesh, Madurai, Lucknow, Rajasthan, Kanchipuram,
Haryana and Hyderabad.
The price range of sarees varies from Rs.130 to Rs.17, 000/-. Gadwal
sarees from Andhra Pradesh are priced between Rs.1, 440/- and Rs.9000/-.
Venkatagiri sarees at Rs.135/- to Rs.2000/-. Tusser silk sarees
for Rs.2, 250/-, Madurai Sungudi sarees from Rs.300/- to Rs.2, 500/-
and the famous Kanchipuram sarees from Rs.5, 000/- to Rs.17, 000/-.
Set to be the highlight of the show is the collection of Maheswari
sarees, a cool combination of cotton and silk. It is a new fabric
from Madhya Pradesh.
The Maheshwari sarees is priced between Rs.850/- and Rs.1, 520/-
and is available in shades of pastel and brown.
The exhibition has also in its storeroom a collection of Chikan
work salwar sets from Lucknow, Khadi Kurta sets, hand embroidered
salwars with mirror work from Rajasthan, nighties, short cotton
tops and ghegra cholis.
Also on sale are a variety of utility items like bedsheets, pillowcases,
sofa backs, jute bags, cushions, divan sets and dining table mats.
Exhibition is on at the Poompuhar showroom on Anna Salai till May
28. Timings of the exhibition is from 8-30 a.m. and 8 p.m. on all
the days (including Saturdays and Sundays).
