Silk House showcases a stunning variety of designs and colours,
for Sarees (traditional apparel for women in India) in silk and
cotton.
Varadan, owner of the showroom says, "The silk tradition
was powered by my great-grandfather Duriaswamy Iyengar, who
was an advocate, way back in 1905 in Kanchipuram."
Hayagrivas also has a branch and looms at Kanchipuram, dedicated
to weaving new designs.
In
the cool interiors of the showroom at T. Nagar, covering over 2,000
square feet, the ground floor has the Cotton section with
sarees from various parts of the country like Kora cotton, Coimbatore
cotton, Kanchi cotton, Madurai cotton etc. They also stock ready-mades,
dress material and salwars in the ground floor. The first floor
is dedicated to silks, silks and more silk sarees. Kanchipuram
silks, Arani silks, Dharmavaram silks, Mysore silks, Banarasi silks
- all these and many more. The price range of the silk sarees
starts from Rs. 2,000/- and can go over Rs. 40,000/-.
As
Varadan, puts it, " Even Lord Brahma, the god of creation,
will struggle to create a new colour, before the galaxy of colours
we offer." He also adds, " The peak season is during
Diwali (the festival of light) and the wedding season. We bring
out beautiful tissue brocade sarees for bridal wear."
The silk section also has reversible Tanjore silk sarees,
which can be worn or draped on both sides. Crepes, Tussars, the
traditional 9 yard sarees are also available.
