More and more companies are going in for Recruitment agencies? What happened to good old advertising in newspapers?

Traditionally, the Human Resources Department of Corporates were entrusted with the task of Recruitment. As companies evolved, HRD gave way to HRM (Human Resources Management). The Chief Human Resources Officer's key function would be restricted not only to Recruitment, but also Training and Re-Training, Compensation Structuring, Deployment, HR Interventions, Organisational Development, Retention, Succession Planning, Personnel Management and Industrial Relations. Hence, there arises a need for Organisations to out-source their Recruitment Function. Typically, large Recruitment Consulting Companies are looked upon as the extended Recruitment arm of Corporates. Recruitment Consulting companies have evolved as Service Providers who work in tandem with the HR Department of companies to help enable them to recruit the best talent available.

Direct Advertisements by Corporates have always been in existence and will continue to be used by them. Several times a Recruitment Consulting company releases an ad on behalf of its client and even takes care of Advertisement design and Ad Response screening. Much sought-after careers today are in Information Technology - specifically in Telecom Software, Embedded Software and e-strategy consulting. Retailing and Media are also fast becoming fancy industries to which top rung talent is moving.

Which income group goes most for change in line (career). For what reasons?

Rather than income group, I would talk about age group. Statistically, professionals between the ages 28 - 38 years, are most likely to opt for a shift in career. The underlying reason is that the risk profile of this age group is more aggressive since their kids are still young or they belong to the Double Income Group where both spouses are working and they have quite a large number of active years of service.

What is the most important criteria for successful placements?

The most important criteria for a successful fitment are the 3 fits : Job Description Fit, Person Profile Fit and Organisation Culture Fit. The best fitment (we no longer use the word placement) is a person who is the best fit in all three.

Has the concept of Recruitment Consulting found acceptance in Chennai, in a major way?

Recruitment Consulting, as a profession, has come to stay. In Chennai, not only the top Rung Corporates but also Mid Cap Corporates (Rs 50 - Rs 100 crore turnover) and Small Cap Companies (Less than Rs 25 crore turnover) are interested in hiring Recruitment Consulting Companies.

What proportion of all recruitment in the city is through Recruitment Consulting?

I can only make a guestimate on this. About 30 % - 40 % of all hiring takes place through Recruitment Consultants in the junior and middle Management levels. As far as top and senior Management hiring is concerned, close to 70 % would be through Recruitment Consulting Companies.

In which industry do you think it is very easy to place people and find trained staff?

Hotel and Travel Industry as well as Ad Industry has trained professionals. But the term "easy fitment" would be a misnomer. Each recruitment is a process in itself and a good recruitment consulting company would always pay highest attention to detail in ensuring that their client gets the best available talent.

What happens in case a client is not satisfied with the placement service? Does the Recruitment Consultant's responsibility end with placement, or do they have to stand guarantee for completion of the contract (if there is one) from the employee's end?

Within a reasonable span of time, a Recruitment Consulting company would offer a replacement free of cost. But, the term" reasonable span of time" is generally mutually agreed upon signing the contract and varies from industry to industry and from client to client.

How much of counselling is involved before a placement is actually done?

The Recruitment Consulting company screens the candidate's CV, interviews him or her for the position in hand, ensures that the 3-pronged fitment is there (as mentioned earlier), appraises the candidate about the client, pegs candidate's expectations at realistic levels and enables the client to get the best hire.

What is the normal charge for services in the Recruitment Consulting market? (Is it charged only at Company-end or both Company and Candidate's end)

Recruitment Consulting Companies charge only the client. Charges usually vary between 20 % of the gross annual compensation to 12.50 % of the gross annual compensation. There is no fee collected from the candidate.
