India, IIT has established itself as the premier centre for
teaching, research and industrial consultancy in the country. The

The system lays stress on developing self-confidence in youth with
thorough learning processes. It encourages research interest of
the faculty and their continual and dynamic interest in the problems
of industrial establishments.
IIT's eminent alumni are a result of this futuristic and
fruitful Indo-German collaboration. IIT was inaugurated in
1959 and it started functioning with 120 students for the first
year B.Tech degree course. It functioned in the Central Leather
Research Institute and held its classes in Allagappa Chettiar
College. From such humble beginnings, it houses today, several
departments, research centres and 100 laboratories of international
standards. Today the institute has 360 faculty, 4000 students and
1250 administrative and supporting staff.
A highly intellectual student community, excellent technical and
supportive staff and an efficient administration have contributed
to IIT being slotted with the best. IIT has been awarded
the ISO 9001 Certification for the Quality Systems Procedure of
the Institute.
Among the famous alumni of IIT Chennai are - Gururaj Deshpande
(Chairman, Sycamore Networks),T T Jagannathan (Group
MD - TTK), C G Krishnadas Nair (MD, HAL), Venky Harinarayan
(Co-founder - junglee.com) and Sunil Wadhwani (CEO, iGate
