MADRAS
MEDICAL COLLEGE (MMC)
 The
distinction of having the first lady doctor in the English speaking
world and the first Indian lady doctor goes to Madras Medical
College (MMC). From being a private medical hall, MMC
is today a centre of excellence, imparting training for all specialities
in the field of medicine and surgery.
The Madras General Hospital was founded in 1664 and became
a formal medical facility. By 1772 it was training Europeans, Eurasians
and Indians in the allopathic system of medicine and sending them
to various dispensaries to assist doctors. It was regularised as
a medical school on 1820 and became a state-sponsored institution
in 1835. 1842 heralded a turning point in Indian medical history,
when Indians were admitted for the first time and senior courses
with a comprehensive curriculum spanning five years were started.
MMC was accorded the status of a college in 1850 and was
affiliated to the University of Madras in 1857.
