JEST RIOT - SUMMER CAMP

Its that time of the year again; when children will not stay off your hair. Cool off and put them in a summer camp. Chennaibest.com speaks to Shama Shroff of Jest Riot about what 'summer camps' aim to do. Parents love summer camps, and from what Shama says, children will too.

What was the inspiration behind starting this summer camp?

Throughout the year children are under a lot of pressure of homework, exams and academics. They get more drawn towards the television and computers. In the bargain, the child’s creative instinct gets lost somewhere along the way. So we have planned a camp, which would focus on creative arts.

What are the objectives that each Camp aims to achieve, in terms of Personality development of the child?

Jest RiotThe camps are specially designed to awaken the child’s latent creativity, and to explore a world beyond books and television.

We do not conduct any competitions at the camp because, children are already under pressure to perform at school everyday, with exams and and getting a rank etc.

At the camp we divide the children in groups of five, where each child gets to be the group leader for a day. So every child gets the opportunity to be a winner. This also helps the child in terms of personality development.

What activities are lined up for the children?

Jest RiotFolk art, fun with paper, mask making, finger painting, touch and feel painting, tattoo making, environmental awareness, memory building, kite making, candle making, screen-printing, block printing, tie and dye, paper bag toys, western dancing, basic photography and much more. The activities are planned according to the age groups.

The dance sessions will be handled by the John Britto Academy.

Typically how would you describe a day in your summer camp?

Fun and creativity...

Jest RiotHow do you deal with noisy or troublesome kids?

We believe that there are no troublesome children. They get troublesome only when they are bored or not challenged creatively. And we love noisy children, as we feel that is the way they express their enthusiasm and excitement.

How do you measure the efficacy of the camp?

At the end of the camp both the children and the parents should be left with a feeling of having learnt something new and had a lot of fun learning it.
