Are you one of those who have spent hours travelling and spent
thousands of rupees on transportation and accommodation in order
to attend an admission test to any of the premier management institutes?
Well, if you are one of those who have gone through that ordeal,
just whisper a prayer of thanks, because God certainly seems to
have seen your suffering.
Xavier Labour Relationship Institute (XLRI), one of the
premier management institutes in the country, is going online for
its Admission tests, in a tie up with a Chennai-based software company
called, Blueshift. XLRI is the first such Institute in India
to go online for its admission tests.
Dr
Sankaran P Raghunathan, Chairman, Blueshift, announcing the
tie-up said, "SENATE is a turnkey service which enables
the complete online management of the test process, from application
processing to results and report generation. Blueshift is offering
XLRI a complete package of services, which include Online registration,
content preparation, website design, an electronic brochure, complete
management of logistics, test center tie-ups, test supervision,
delivery and reporting".
The application is processed through the XLRI website www.xlri.edu.
The candidates can choose the accredited test centres, which are
typically Internet centres with a certain level of infrastructure.
The test is answered online and the answers are evaluated immediately.
Blueshift is parnering with Dishnet DSL and Junction 96
at present to use their Internet centres as test centres with the
entire hosting service is being provided by Satyam Infoway.
Speaking
about XLRI’s decision to go online with the tests, Fr Thomas,
Director, XLRI said, "Some of the main advantages that XLRI will
now enjoy are the complete elimination of wastage of man power and
working man days, which can now be used for training, research and
other more useful pursuits. Till now we used to spend around 500
working man-days for conducting the admission tests manually. Now
we save that time".
Certain questions that were raised to address issues regarding
the change from manual to online were also addressed. The user interface
for SENATE is very simple and easy to operate for even a person
with little or no knowledge of computers. The entire application
process and test centre details will be elaborated upon for candidates
on the XLRI website, so that they can be clear on how the whole
process works. The demo of the exam will also be made available
on the XLRI website as well as the test centres.
"We have the charisma to be pioneers and XLRI has always been
a pioneer right from the time it started in 1949. We are again taking
a pioneering step today and setting a trend in the realm on e-learning.
On the 6th of January, 2002 when 25,000 to 30,000 students
will be taking their tests online for admission to XLRI. As the
tradition been in the past, the first advertisement for XLRI admission
will be released in Chennai on the 19th of August and
from that day students can register at our site", said a proud
and beaming Fr Thomas.
Explaining
the payment modalities, Dr Sankaran P Raghunathan said, "At
present, we do not have an online payment facility. But XLRI has
tied up with two banks ICICI and HDFC. The students
will pay the fees at these banks and the amount will be credited
the same day to XLRI. Jamshedpur. The banks also inform us as to
who has paid and our server gets the information. Only after the
payment has been authorised that the electronic id and password
for taking the exam are mailed to the student’s id".
XLRI is the first to go online with its entrance tests. Having
set the trend, other educational and even corporate institutions
are going to see the benefits of going online. Fr. Thomas also mentioned
that for the test early next year, 25 affiliated institutes out
of 800 have been identified. All institutions which are affiliated
to XLRI and which use the XLRI exam scores will now benefit by a
faster, more efficient process. They will receive scores faster
and can use the electronic process for analysis required to short-list
candidates. Other institutions, which are currently using Common
Admission Test (CAT) and Management Admission Test (MAT)
scores can now use XLRI’s scores and benefit from this quick and
reliable electronic process.
