Chennaibest.com speaks to R.Chellapan, Managing Director,
Numeric Power Systems Limited, a leading UPS manufacturing
company in India.
What
would you consider the most significant achievement of Numeric Power
Systems?
We are the only company in India which offers the entire range
of power electronic products. The most important thing about our
product is it is applied across industries, and that means it is
highly service-oriented. Customer satisfaction is the key, and I
think we have been fairly successful on that count. We have 54 customer
support centres, countrywide, that take care of after-sales services.
What is the size of the UPS market in Chennai?
And its growth rate?
In Chennai we are talking about a Rs 60 crore market, and Numeric
Power Systems has almost 50% of the market share. The Indian market
is growing at the rate of 30% to 40% annually and globally its growing
at the rate of 100%. Specific to Chennai, the growth rate can be
easily put at 40%.
How
does Chennai compare with other cities in terms of volumes?
It figures in the growth rates, the 30% to 40% range I gave you
was because, up north it is 30%, Mumbai is probably 35% and in Chennai
it is 40%. This is because of the IT boom.
Who are the other players in this industry?
Tata Liebert, DB Electronics, APC and Mitsubishi.
Could you give us a break-up in terms of the
Customer segments?
Data Centres, Software Development Centres, ISPs, Banking, Finance,
Insurance, Telecom, Process Control, Industry Automation, Hospitals,
Defence, Education, Home PCs and SMEs.
What
are the latest technological developments for UPS?
We have introduced digital technology in all our models. The latest
model is the MGE UPS range, which has from 0.22 kVA to 4800
kVA capacity. We have tied up with MGE UPS Systems S.A, France,
which is known worldwide for design and manufacturing digital technology-based
UPS systems. We are currently importing this product. We are planning
to import till October this year and then we will start manufacturing
it here.
Compared to global standards where is the
Indian market?
Technology-wise we are close to any overseas product. Still 25%
to 30% of the market is in the unorganised sector, and products
from the organised sector are about 10% costlier. It is only the
organised sector which can afford to invest in R & D. To develop
this market further, we have recently set up an R & D facility
in Taiwan.
What variables play a decisive role when it
comes to choosing a system for an Office/home requirement?
Cost and recommendation given by the Company or person who sells
the computer.
