| REHANE
YAVAR - INTERVIEW
Rehane Yavar is no new name in Chennai fashion circles.
This pretty lady was probably among the first professional fashion
designers of the city. She has also won the Best Designer of
the year award, from Femina, in 1996.
We talked to this charming person, about fashion in Chennai today
and what she brings to her work.
So, Rehane, how did you get to become a fashion
designer?
I have always been fascinated by dress designing. In fact, I did
my first collection when I was 13 years young. I took it up as a
profession only after my marriage.
Who was your inspiration?
I have no such thing. You see, some love to sing, some love to
dance. I love to design. If you love something, you just go ahead
and do it.
How conducive is the Chennai market for designer
wear?
In one way, Chennai's potential is untouched or untapped. In another
way, the market is also difficult. People here are very value-conscious.
They are particular that when they buy a designer garment, it has
to have value for money.
How
will you describe your designs?
My designs are glamorous. My strong point lies in Indo-western
garments. When you see an outfit designed by me, you can say that
it is a Rehane outfit.
What is this unique stamp in your outfits?
My clothes portray the core, the essence of me. A little bit of
me is in every outfit I design. I create my outfits with true feeling
and thought. I put a mood and quality into each of my designs. I
want my client to look good in my clothes and be confident of herself.
What about Chennai ladies. How fashion-conscious
are they?
The ladies are afraid of being glamorous. They put so many barriers
when it comes to dressing. People can dress in anything, but here
they impose so many rules on themselves. They have to come out of
their shell.
Your
comments on the Chennai modelling scene.
The girls here are very shy, you know as if waiting to bloom. But,
they have immense talent. I mostly use local models for my designs.
What is the current rage in terms of fashion
wear?
Short Kurtas, four-piece salwars, scarfs, stretch jeans.
How about designing accessories?
I would love to, but as of now, I do not have the time.
