SHVETHA JAISHANKAR

Miss Charming and Miss India International of the Femina Miss India, 1998…..Second Runner up at Miss International (Tokyo, 1998)….. Bharatanatyam dancer….. Tennis player….. and an extremely nice person to know. Meet Shvetha Jaishankar.

Shvetha JaishankarStar Sign and year of birth?

Sagittarian, of ' 78

Education?

I did my schooling in Madras (Chennai), Church Park and DAV and my college education at Ethiraj.

Hobbies and talents?

I like reading, movies, tennis, swimming, meeting people, going out. I was a Bharatanatyam dancer for some time and I paint as well.

Could you fill us in on your family background.

I am the only child and my parents work together in a pharmaceutical company. My mom's a doctor, but she now runs the medical part of the company and I live with them and my grandfather. Pretty small family, but we have a whole bunch of cousins.

Shvetha JaishankarDo you feel that modelling can be a career?

Definitely. A pageant gives you a title and a platform from which to launch yourself. You can then endorse products, you can be a model, and there are tonnes of ads to be done. It can be a full-time career.

You've worked abroad?

Yeah I've worked abroad. I've been to shows in the US and London and so on.

What is the difference between modelling abroad and
modelling in India?

Well, its different because the market is so very different. There are so many more designers and so many more people who are fashion-conscious and willing to buy clothes. Here the focus is more on intricate designs and embroidery. And the fabrics themselves are different from what you get abroad.

Your views on the modelling and fashion scene today?

Madras has definitely changed a lot since I began two years ago. There are so many more parents willing to let their children model.

Balancing professional and personal life?

Yeah, yeah, completely! In fact, this profession gives you a chance to do that, because you are not working all days of the month. Its sort of a freelance job - sometimes you get work and sometimes you don't. So there is a lot of time to pursue other things.

Criteria for a good model?

Shvetha JaishankarDedication, hard work and hordes of other factors, including your mentality. Beauty is just one of them. You have to be street smart. Any good model will tell you that.

Where do you see yourself in
today's set up?

I don't want to sound complacent but I am very happy about who I am and where I am today. I have definitely created a name for myself. If you have your ambitions and set your goals towards it, you can make it. I never wanted to be a model. It was forced into my head. I was more of a sportsperson.

Unfulfiled ambitions?

I would like to see a little more of my own country.

Your views on the party scene?

I enjoy partying, but not an overdose of it.

Guys in your life other than dad?

My grandpa !
