SUNITA'S DESIGN
STUDIO
Body hugs and mini skirts, ghagras and sarees....www.chennaibest.com
checks out what is "most happening" in Chennai's fashion
scene for women, in this interesting and informative chat with Althea
and Jyotsna of Sunita's Design Studio.
Is
there any real change in the fashion scene in Chennai?
Yes, definitely. People are a lot more figure-conscious than they
were before. They have dropped their pretensions and are more eager
to try out new styles.
What is 'in' today, in the city?
A draped and sculpted look is very much in vogue. People are shedding
their inhibitions and are prepared to wear something real daring,
figure-hugging and bold. They want to make a statement. The frills
and flouncy dresses are out.
The Designer wear concept - Has it caught
on in Chennai?
Yes, very much so. Some buy these as a sort of investment for their
wardrobe. Some buy them to be aware of the latest trends and for
some it is a way of life.
What type of apparel sells the fastest?
Makes of Indo-western garments, body hugs, stretch blouses, drain
pipe trousers, short length fitted kurtas (a long top), A-line lehngas
(an ethnic Indian wear), pleated lehngas, sarees (traditional Indian
wear for women) with a tie-up blouse are definitely in.
Is it more important to go by the latest fashion,
or go with what is comfortable?
Many
things may be in fashion right now. But it is also important that
one should know what will suit and what will not. Sometimes the
hottest thing may not look good on you. Ultimately, you should feel
good and confident in what you are wearing. That is the bottom line.
In general, how many of these clothes we see
in fashion shows are actually wearable?
Though most of the clothes you see on the ramp are designed to
make an impact, many of them are really wearable. Otherwise, designers
will go out of business. The jazzy clothes you see are just for
creating an effect to say 'Look at me'.
What are the season's favourite colours?
Acid pink, flame orange, mango - all natural, bright, fruity colours
are favourites this season.
What kind of fabric is 'in'?
Linen is used a lot and Khadi is popular with the college-going
crowd. People are moving away from the synthetics.
How current is Chennai when compared to the
fashion capitals?
Chennai has just stepped in to the world of fashion. But, it is
heartening to know that it is improving very fast.
