KalarippayattuKalarippayattu, which originated a few centuries ago in Kerala, is considered to be the mother of all martial arts. A scientific method of self-defense, Kalarippayattu is the only martial art in the world that has a branch dealing with the treatment of injuries caused by it. 'If you know how to break a bone, you should also know how to fix it' is the rationale.

Karate is also one of its offshoots. Karate, which means 'empty-handed', has originated from one of the disciplines of Kalarippayattu called 'Verungkai', which also means 'empty-handed' in Malayalam. 'Verungkai' is the last option for a warrior in battle, who, after having lost all his weapons, resorts to using his bare hands and feet to defend himself. Kalarippayattu was taken to China by a Buddhist monk called Bodhidharma, who taught this art to other monks at the now famous Temple of Shaolin to defend themselves from kings who were persecuting them. It slowly evolved into the Karate as we know it today.

KalarippayattuIn Chennai, one can learn Kalarippayattu from Shaji John, who has been practicing this art for 16 years. He is a fine example of physical fitness, strength and flexibility, which he attributes to his rigorous training. He teaches about 40 people in the city at select centres. Shaji comments that "People in the city have no peace in them. They are always restless. They can't stand still even for a minute." He also observes that only in Chennai there are more women learning this art, than men. He adds that Kalarippayattu, when properly practiced, will bring peace and tranquility to the mind. It is as much intellectual and spiritual as it is physical. He also offers ayurvedic massage, which has therapeutic value for diseases like arthritis and spondylitis.
