 A
sombre, yet refined martial art, Tai Chi Chuan is 5000 years
old. It essentially means "supreme ultimate fist" in Chinese. And
it is characterised by intricate movements and a fluid style. George
Thomas has started the Tai Chi Academy - the only authorised
Yang style school in the country. He trained under Fu
Sheng Yuan of China. After 24 years of experience in various
schools of martial art, he has come to believe that Tai Chi is the
best.
Tai Chi focuses on fitness of mind and body above everything else.
Anybody in the age group of 16 to 67 can learn this art. Talking
of students, some illustrious ones include: John K. John (Managing
Director - Johnson Lifts Ltd), Malathi Gopalakrishnan (Principal
- Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan) and L. Subramaniam (Vice-President -
NIIT).
The basic course includes 85 forms and 700 movements, taught in
50 classes, covering 6 months. Says George, "In 21 minutes
you can rehearse all the movements, once you are a master. Doing
this everyday, you can gain total control of your body and mind".
Unique to physical fitness in Chennai - looks like this one is here
to stay.
