MEDICAL ASTROLOGY

ImMedicine and Astrology may seem poles apart, but it seems astrology does play a role in our physical and mental well-being.

Medical Astrology is that branch of Astrology which deals with the influences of Planets and Signs upon the lives and health of human beings.

Cosmic ManAn individual is the microcosm of the macrocosmic universe. The Zodiac is known as the Kala Purusha - the cosmic man. The parts of the Kala Purusha resemble that of an individual, from head to foot. The twelve Zodiac signs represent the various parts of the human body. It is easy to locate the disease in any part of the body with the help of the Zodiac signs affected by the Planets and their aspects.

Our Vedic Medical system, Ayurveda, is of the opinion that Man is the epitome of the Universe.

"Pancha Bhoota Mahe Dehe Ahara Pancha Bhoudhikaha." (The human body is made of the five elements, and so is the food we take).

"Dosha, Dadhu, Mala Moolam Sariram", i.e the physical body is composed of:

Three doshas -Vata (movement), Pitta (Energy) and Kapha (Inertia).

Seven Dadhus - Rasa (taste), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (flesh), Meda (secretion), Asti (bones), Majja (marrow) and Shukra (semen)

Three Malas - Mala (motion), Mutra (urine) and Seedha (sweat).

Diagnosis can be made based on the the twelve signs and the seven planets - their placement, aspects and conjunction. Diseases may be chronic or acute, inherent or active. The nature of the complaint a person is liable to have may be seen by the sign upon the ascendent (Lagna) - the Raasi in which birth takes place.

The Sun and the Moon have much to do with the state of health. The planets afflicting the Sun, Moon and the Ascendent indicate the nature of ill-health. Each sign, each planet has a specific area in the body and if afflicted, that part of the body is affected.

Astrology ChartAn eminent Doctor in Tamil Nadu, in one of his Presidential addresses to the Indigeneous Medical Practitioners, said - "A knowledge of astrology, if judiciously applied has not merely a theoretical value, but also a practical value. The horoscope of any individual may be noted in his case sheet".

Hippocrates, the father of Medicine, is also of the same view. "A physician cannot safely administer medicine, if he is unacquainted with astrology. He who practices medicine without the benefit of the movement of the stars and planets is a fool." He further stated -"Touch not with iron that part of the body ruled by the sign the Moon is transitting." It means, one should not perform a surgical procedure with a knife (iron) upon a part of the patient's body which is ruled by the astrological sign through which the Moon is moving at the time. The moon remains in one sign approximately for two and a half days.

According to Hippocrates, disobeying this law will inevitably result in one of three failures of any surgery performed at the wrong time:

  • Complications, including infection.
  • Unusually slow and painful healing and recuperation
  • Fatality

The basic purpose of Medical Astrology is to suggest the planetary influences which cause various diseases, afflictions and accidents. The cardinal signs (1,4,7 & 10) and 6,8 &12 houses give clues to know about the diseases. When diseases are known, located and diagnosed, treatment will be easy and cure is assured. All diseases are not curable by drugs. Physical diseases are inter-dependent upon mind and mental harmony is the sine qua non of health and well-being.
