NOVELTY CARDS - PROMISING EXCLUSIVITY

Novelty Cards - the latest option in Chennai for all those looking for exclusivity in wedding cards is situated in the up market locality of Egmore. This shop is unique in the sense that, the latest cards that hit the Mumbai and Delhi markets are available with immediate effect in this place.

Manohar and Ranjeet Kothari, who own Novelty Cards are not new to this business though. They also manage another showroom called Kothari Cards in Sowcarpet. Previously catering mainly to the North Indian community, they are looking to expand their business horizons with this new showroom.

The 2000 sq ft air-conditioned showroom is different from the usual showroom for wedding cards because there are only two display shelves in the showroom.  Ranjeet explains, "We don't want customers to be bewildered with choice.  We listen to the customer's ideas first, and then according to their requirements we show them various designs.  The absence of displays makes the customer interact with us and we are able to cater to his needs more accurately."

Publicity has been mainly through word of mouth.  "We have had clients from different parts of the country; people who buy from us, recommend us to their friends and relatives.  A card for everybody and with a difference from the usual variety, is what we promise to our customers," says Manohar Kothari.

According to them, the multi-colour offset cards are very popular and so are the cards with embossed designs and handwork-inlaid cards.  They even have cards with natural leaves as decoration.  Prices, they claim are their USP, since they are reasonably priced, for the kind of exclusivity they offer.

Ranjeet Kothari adds, "Exclusive wedding card outlets are very few in Chennai. This problem is compounded by the fact that established houses do not have the kind of variety required to satisfy every person. This in turn results in the customer having to compromise on the concept. The showroom will house cards made of hand made paper, imported boards, synthetic material and offset types among others."

Though their forté is wedding cards, they also deal with exclusive cards for special occasions and bulk orders from corporates for festivals. Having a turnover of more than seven lakh cards per annum, they are hoping to double it with the opening of this new outlet.
