Perumall Chetty and Sons, one of the oldest commercial establishments
in the city, was founded in 1840, by the grandfather of V Sethuraman
who is the managing partner of the firm at present. Through the
decades, they have become synonymous with the stationery trade in
Chennai.
A
family concern from the time of its establishment, it is managed
by the fourth and fifth generation of Perumall Chetty.
Till very recently, Perumall Chetty and Sons had two sister concerns
Hoe and Company started in 1886 and the Madras Pencil
Factory, which was bought from the government in 1927. Hoe and
Company was into printing, while the Madras Pencil Factory produced
pencils. Some of the famous brands from their heydays were 'Star
of India', 'Mercury', 'Perumal Chetty Drawing' and 'Engineer'.
At one point of time Perumall Chetty and Sons was the reference
point for people when they wanted imported stationery goods.C
P Ramaswamy Aiyer's son Pattabhiram who was a Central
Government Minister and Swami Chinmayananda are among the
many prominent personalities who have visited this exclusive showroom.
Even today they pride themselves on the fact that they have remained
an exclusive showroom for the best in stationery.
