LEGENDS SPEAK THEIR MINDS…
www.chennaibest.com caught up with the former tennis greats
who were in Chennai, courtesy, Vijay Amritraj, en route to
the Legends tournament in Bangalore. It is not every day that one
gets to meet these legends and certainly not Bjorn Borg, Guillermo
Vilas, Pat Cash, Henri Leconte, Mansour Bahrami, Ross Case, Anand
Amrtraj and Vijay Amirtraj all together at one time!
Borg and Vilas are on their first visit to India, while Case, Leconte,
Cash and Mansour have already been to India.
"It's been a dream come true for me. For years I have been trying
to get the guys with whom I had lived with and played with, back
to my hometown. And I am absolutely thrilled the day has become
a reality", said Vijay.
BJORN BORG
On
life after retirement…
I have not actually retired from active tennis. I am actively involved
in the senior tour. I participated in 13 or 14 events out of the
20 or 21 events that were held this year on the senior tour. Next
year, I will be taking part in one or two events though I will still
continue to participate in exhibition matches and special events.
On his other commitments…
Why I am going to participate in less number of events on the senior
tour is because of a project back home. It is a five-year project
involving 8 - 10 Swedish kids between 14 and 17 years of age. Two
full-time coaches will be involved with me. I am looking forward
to it.
On how he spends his time…
Well, looks like you want to know everything about me. (With some
coaxing from Vilas and Leconte…) Well, If you really want to know,
I spend quite a lot of time with my 15 year old son, Robin, who
is also onto tennis.
On how his son handles the pressure of having
a tennis legend for a father…
Yes, there is pressure on him because of my achievements and sometimes
the pressure I put on him to better himself. He handles the pressure
quite well and plays quite well too. I am very proud of him.
On the tennis talent in Sweden…
Though we are a small country, we have produced good players like
Stefan (Edberg) and others. In think this is because we have
a very good programme. And why Sweden is able to produce so many
stars even though it is only a small country with a population of
about 9 million, is that there are lots of good programmes across
the country. There are very good coaches too.
