ChessFounded in 1947 and named the Madras Chess Club, through several name-changes is today known as the Tamil Nadu Chess Association (TNCA). In a state where interest in Chess is peaking among children and young adults, the association acts as a catalyst in promoting the game.

The TNCA organises state-level Chess championships in categories ranging from the Under-8 to Under-25 (also for senior men and women). Those who qualify from these state championships are sent for the National Championships. Coaching camps are held for candidates heading for the National Championships. Cash incentives, entry fee payment to championships, transportation and daily allowances are all part of TNCA's effort towards nurturing and supporting promising talent. The TNCA also works towards setting up Chess associations at the district level.

Among the Star Chess players who have reached the limelight with TNCA's support, are Manuel Aaron, Vishwanathan Anand, S Vijayalakshmi, K Sasikaran and Aarthie Ramaswamy.
