Could you explain to us in brief the cycle
starting from when the student comes to you till he is placed in a
University abroad?
We
take care of everything, right from choosing an University to filling
the application form, to giving the statement of purpose, to presenting
the application. We pay attention even to small things like the
first name, middle name and surname format about which many Indian
students are not even aware of. For example recently, a student
who secured 75% could not secure an admission in a University, while
a student who got 58% got admission in the same University. The
student who secured a lower percentage was admitted over the student
who secured 75% because his application was presented well and he
had explained why he had not secured high marks.
How would a student identify whether studying
abroad could improve his career prospect?
Nowadays even middle class people come to us. In India, the situation
is such that, a deserving candidate does not get the education that
he desires thanks to some government policies and quotas. Foreign
study is one option that opens doors of opportunities for these
students.
No Institute or University course abroad or in India can guarantee
a job. But if your are specifically asking in terms of what are
the placement opportunities that come the way of Indian students
studying in Universities abroad, it presents a unique problem. Most
of the top business schools like Harvard, Stanford,Thunderbird
etc have programmes where the alumni appoints fresh graduates.
Also students who go on a student visa will not be given a job because
of government policies, which require a working visa.
Could you give us a profile of the students
who come to you in order to enlist your services for studying abroad?
Upper middle class and middle class; people who have money are
the ones who come. 80% of the students come for post-ggraduate
courses, the rest 20% for under-graduate courses. Most opt for
business schools while a few go in for Engineering. Medicine is
also in demand, but very difficult to enter, since the entrance
tests are tough. Preparing for them and taking them itself will
cost a few lakh of Rupees.
What are the various tests that students have
to take to qualify for admissions in Universities abroad?
Test
of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Scholastic Aptitude Test
(SAT), Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and Graduate
Record Examination (GRE) are some of the tests that students
have to take to qualify for admissions in Universities abroad.
TOEFL evaluates the English proficiency of the student. Colleges
and Universities in the U.S. and Canada, where English is the language
of instruction, expect students whose mother tongue is not English,
to take TOEFL. SAT is a 3-hour multiple choice test that measures
the verbal and mathematical abilities developed in and out of school.
GMAT is designed to assess the management aptitude of students for
advanced study in business schools. It measures general, verbal
and mathematical skills of the student. The GRE is another similar
test.
How many students from Chennai come to you
in a year?
10, 000 students are placed every year, while 20,000 students come
for counselling.
What are the advantages and disadvantages
of studying abroad?
For those who are academically strong, it is an advantage because
they get the opportunity to interact with an international student
community. The possibility of doing their degrees both post-graduate
and under-graduate in different countries is also there. In fact,
transfers between campuses especially between the U.S.A. and Europe
are encouraged. Another advantage is the small classes where individuality,
initiative and discussions are highly encouraged and modern facilities
which, complement the quality of education offered. The disadvantages
could be the new culture to which one has to adjust, being away
from home and family but again this is just a matter of six months
by which time they'll get around.
