ENTOMOLOGY
RESEARCH INSTITUTE
"Research
in insects for better agricultural productivity". That is the
motto of the Entomology Research Institute. Located inside
Loyola College campus, this institute was started in 1963
by the noted entomologist T. N Ananthakrishnan. The institute
conducts research in areas like Biopesticides, Biocontrol, Genetic
engineering and Molecular Biology.
The institute is engaged in research to produce disease and fungi-resistant
seeds, environment-friendly pesticides and medicinal products that
control various human diseases like diabetes. The Institute Director
Rev Fr Ignacimuthu is confident that they will produce insect-resistant
legume seeds in another five to six years. The institute also has
collaboration with two international institutions and offers scientific
solutions to companies of repute like SPIC, Novartis Foundation
and EID Parry. Many
of the researchers, attached to this institute, work on projects
for Mac Arthur Foundation and University Grants Commission
(UGC).
The Institute offers research positions leading to Doctorate and
Post Doctoral Fellowship. In a research environment where the interaction
between farmers and scientists are minimal, ERI tries to transfer
novel technologies to farmers. The scientists at ERI believe that
Biotechnology is the key to solve the present food problem faced
by third world countries and are hence working in this direction.

RAMANUJAM
INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY IN MATHEMATICS
The
Ramanujam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (RIASM)
was founded by Dr Alagappa Chettiar in 1951, as a memorial
to the mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujam. Since its
inception, the Institute has made valuable contributions in the
field of mathematics. The Institute offers courses in Mathematics
leading to M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D (full / part time).
The aim of the Institute is to promote fundamental and advanced
research in mathematics. It conducts research in thrust areas of
pure mathematics like Algebra, Analysis, Topology and Geometry.
The faculty members also take part in activities related to the
Indian Mathematical Olympiad (INMO). The Institute now comes
under the University of Madras, after it was merged with
the Department of Mathematics at the University in 1967.
The
library of the Institute is one of the finest of its kind and houses
an extensive collection of books, journals, proceedings of international
conferences and works of eminent mathematicians. It serves the need
of any mathematician for research activities. Its prized possessions
are the facsimile copies of Ramanujam's notebooks, originals of
which are in Wren Library, Cambridge. Incidentally the University
of Madras has two of Ramanujam's original note books. The institute
is also taking steps to start a Ramanujam museum inside the campus.
