major areas of Collagen, Bio-products, Biotechnology, Organic and
Inorganic Chemistry. An institute that stands second to none in
the leather sector in the country. Central Leather Research Institute
or CLRI.
CLRI was founded in 1948. Today, it is perhaps the only name that
can boast of infrastructure to produce quality students, products
and services for the leather industry. Apart from within the country,
students from over 64 foreign nationalities come to undergo training
here. The curriculum is highly sophisticated and the institute conducts
courses for Anna University.
Courses range from B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology) in Leather
Technology right up to a Doctorate (Ph.D.). Vocational programmes
are also offered that include Leather Processing, Leather Footwear,
Leather Goods, Garments and Saddlery. The 600-strong staff ensures
smooth functioning of the organisation. CLRI also conducts programmes
at the national level towards upgrading decentralised and cottage
scale leather units.
CLRI is known best for hosting the International Leather Fair
each year, which attracts people from every corner of the globe.
Technologies take the spotlight in CLRI. From the development of
chemicals and finishing products to the very designs used.
