One of the largest Management Associations in the country affiliated
to the All India Management Association, the Madras Management
Association (MMA) is a non-profit association serving the cause
of management excellence since 1956.
Founded
as the Madras Institute of Management (MIM) in August 1956
with the objective of furthering management development with Dr.
A Lakshmanaswamy Mudaliar, the illustrious Vice-chancellor of
the University of Madras as its president. MIM was
formally inaugurated with twenty institutional members on September
19, 1956. Following the formation of the All India Management
Association in 1957, the name was changed officially to Madras Management
Association (MMA), in conformity with the names of other similar
associations all over India, affiliated to the AIMA.
Nine distinguished personalities of the city got together to form
the Madras Institute of Management and applied formally to the Registrar
of Societies.They were SLT White, Staff
and Industrial Relations Manager, Burmah-Shell, NV Naidu,
Custodian, Prithvi Insurance Co. Ltd.,S Anantharamakrishnan,
Chairman, Simpson & Co. Ltd., K Sadagopan, Chief
Administrative Officer, Integral Coach Factory,GV Krishna
Rao, Head of the Department, Business Administration, University
of Madras, T Rogers, Managing Director, Best & Co
(Private) Ltd., NK Aiyer, Secretary and Commercial Manager,
TI Cycles of India, EFG Hunter, Director, Binny &
Co. (Madras) Ltd., and AMM Murugappa Chettiar, Director,
State Bank of India, Madras.
Dr. Sir A L Mudaliar, Vice Chancellor, University of Madras,
was the first President of the MIM. He and the nine founder members
along with V. Ramachandran, Industrial Relations Officer,
Burmah - Shell, Madras constituted the first Managing Committee
of MIM.
The
Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) of the Madras Management
Association was started in 1989. Supported by the Konrad
Adenauer Foundation, the cell assists small and medium entrepreneurs
upgrade their business management knowledge and skills. Since
the inception of the project, a total of 1,026 training activities
in 1,645 training days, with around 43,985 persons have been organised
up to December 31, 2000.
The Executive Education Programme is another feather in MMA's cap.
In the last 45 years, around 2,800 programmes have been conducted
with 1,62,000 participants.
The
MMA Business Leadership Award is given to outstanding personalities
in the field of business, once in every two years, in memory of
the outstanding industrialist, the late S. Anantharamakrishnan.
This award has been so far given to corporate and industrial giants
like the late Dr J R D Tata, Arvind Mafatlal, Dr Bharat Ram,
S L Kirloskar, Aditya Vikram Birla and Dr C Rangarajan.
The MMA has five categories of Membership - Institutional Membership,
Association Membership, Individual Membership, Associate Membership
and Student Membership.
In addition to the above classes of members, professional Individual
Members of the All India Management Association will automatically
become members of the MMA.
Over the years, the MMA has grown in stature. Its contribution
to management development can be gauged by the growth of its membership
strength from 20 to over 2,800 during the last 45 years.
