LITTLE THEATRE
Aysha
Rau puts it across emphatically, "Theatre aids in the child's
personality development. Our educational system is too stressful
on kids, as a result of which they squash all creativity. Schools
don't help build the child's self esteem".
Little Theatre, was formed by Aysha Rau in May 1991, to
promote the cause of theatre for children and tap their creative
potential.
Little
Theatre aims at promoting creative aptitude and talent through workshops
conducted by professionals who are child-friendly; adults in dance,
drama, art and craft, mime, music, pottery, puppetry, magic, photography
and 3-D projects. The children are taken for educative excursions.
The key word in Little Theatre is 'to have fun'. It has a
membership of around 70 children between the ages of 5 and 14. The
children, besides being in the workshop, also get to participate
in their annual pantomime. Among the pantomimes staged so far are
'Mermaid' in 1995, 'Snow White and the Travelling
Circus' in 1996, 'Frog Prince and the Royal Catwalk'
in1997, 'Puss in Boots' in 1998, 'Oddbods'
in June 2000 and the most recent 'Cleopatra'
in December 2000.
Aysha
Rau affirms - "Half the delinquency on the streets is due
to untapped talent." Towards remedying this situation, Little
Theatre conducts creative workshops once a week on a Wednesday afternoon
at the Corporation Middle School, Chetpet. The children from the
adjoining slum attend the school. In May 2000, the children from
this programme did five street plays at five slums within the city
and received tremendous response.
Registrations for Little Theatre open for the year on March 14th,
9.00 am.
