MOZHI
Nestled
in serene surroundings in Thiruvanmiyur is Mozhi, a public
charitable institution for developing resources in language and
culture. Mozhi in Tamil means Language. Founded in 1989, Mozhi has
an experienced interdisciplinary team at the helm. It is constantly
developing conceptual and technological tools for understanding
culture.
Mozhi's work and perception of Culture has won international recognition
with UNESCO and the Ford Foundation offering support
to carry out its activities without interruption. The University
of Chicago, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore
and the Tamil University of Tanjavur, offers research and
technical support.
Mozhi focuses on three thrust areas. The Centre at Thiruvanmiyur
concentrates on Language resources. The Roja Muthiah Research
centre, which is the Bibliographic division and the Seethuraman
Centre, which is the funding research on language and culture.
Mozhi uses the latest in computer technology for compiling dictionaries
in Tamil and analysing texts in Tamil. The Dictionary of Contemporary
Tamil by Cre-A and The Dictionary of Idioms and Phrases
in Contemporary Tamil are two noteworthy publications. At present
it is engaged in developing a style manual in Tamil.
Mozhi in collaboration with the University of Chicago, is engaged
in maintaining, cataloguing and microfilming one of the rare collections
of Tamil Material of the late Roja Muthiah Chettiar of Kottaiyyur.
The Professor Sethuraman Centre aims at promoting cross-cultural
research in language, literature and culture, the requisite tools
and human resources. It also intends, at a later stage, to create
a network of Tamil and other Indian languages.
GRANTS FOR RESEARCH OFFERED
Deadline for filled in forms- 15th August every year. Results
will be intimated before 30th October every year Last date for sending
the completed manuscripts 31st December every year.
