CHOLAMANDAL ARTISTS' VILLAGE

M.F. Hussain, Sultan Ali, Reddeppa Naidu, Bhoopan Kakar, Satish Gujral, Anjoli Ela Menon... the list is endless.

What are we talking about?

CholamandalaThese people have, at some time or the other, made that journey to what is probably one of the most organised co-operative societies of artists in the country. Cholamandal Artists' Village.

Some famous visitors to the Cholamandal Artists' Village
Queen Juliana - Queen Mother of Netherlands.
Princesses Irene and Sophia of Spain
Anthony Caro (World famous Sculptor) from England
Film Makers - Gautam Ghosh, Aravindan, Girish Karnad and Kabir Bedi.
Dancer Malavika Sarukkai
Poet A.K. Ramanujam

The Cholamandal Artists' Village, on the East Coast Road, is really no village. It is a meeting of some of the most intellectual minds in the country. The village was born in 1965, an ambitious experiment in Modern art. About 20 artists live here, some of them having constructed cottages and houses in which they live. Cholamandal is named after the Chola dynasty - among the most ardent patrons of art and sculpture in the history of India.

CholamandalArtists and sculptors work in their own studios during the day and apply themselves to some art or craft during the leisure hours to supplement their income from the sale of paintings or sculptures. There is a permanent gallery that attracts visitors throughout the year. They also hold exhibitions all over the country.

The sheer beauty of the village could have the most ardent art-critic raving. These artists have a goal and a purpose - to re-establish their roots and initiate a renaissance of India's glory in art. Who knows, maybe we have a Rembrandt or a Monet in the making, right next door!
