THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

BuddhaOn the banks of the Adyar river, the world headquarters of the Theosophical Society was established in 1886.

The great hall of the Theosophists has on its walls bas reliefs of Krishna, Buddha, Christ and Zarathrushtra. Also symbols of Mahavir and verses of the Koran. Prominent in the hall is the statue of the Society founders - Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and Col. Henry S. Olcott.

Banyan TreeIn the huge estate gardens shrines of all major faiths stand. But the biggest attraction is the 200 year old Banyan tree (one of the biggest in the country). Up to 3000 people can sit under its shade.

The Society's Adyar library has nearly 1,65,000 books and 20,000 palm-leaf manuscripts. For this treasury of knowledge, the library is recognised as a centre for post-graduate studies in Sanskrit and Indology by the University of Madras.

KRISHNAMURTI FOUNDATION INDIA

The Krishnamurti Foundation India (KFI), a religious, charitable and educational institution located at Vasanta Vihar in Chennai, was set up in 1928. The centre runs seven schools in India.

Krishnamurti Foundation India The Foundation preserves and publishes the teachings of the renowned thinker and philospher - J Krishnamurti. Books, audio and videotapes on the life, work and vision of Krishnamurti are available here. The centre arranges for video shows at various religious and educational institutions. There is a reading room and a lending library, with a large collection of Krishnamurti's books on religion and philosophy. Among the popular books are - Freedom from the Known, The First and Last Freedom, Beyond Violence, Commentaries on Living Volumes: I, II, III, Krishnamurti on Education, Krishnamurti for Beginners and You are the World. The four audio and two video series titled An Introduction are for the beginners. For those wishing to study in-depth, accommodation is provided at the centre for a short period.

Open - 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Closed on Mondays.
