DAUGHTERS
OF THE OCEAN
Directed
by Mithran Devanesan, 'Daughters of the Ocean' is a contemporary
dance theatre production, performed by Anita Ratnam and
the Arangham Dance Theatre. 'Daughters of the Ocean'
is inspired by Dr Shobita Punja’s book, of the same name.
Dr Shobita Punja was in the city, to introduce the book. She also
participated in the post-programme discussion with the audience.
Using the myths of Indian River Goddesses and the powerful image
of a river’s endless wandering, the production attempts throwing
the spotlight on characters and experiences that touch and mould
our lives. The use of the traditional “katha” or story telling technique
in Indian theatre, was the highlight of this superb production.
Myriad personal experiences, expressed through innovative choreography,
made it a riveting performance.
“I have never invested so much in a production before! 'Daughters
of the Ocean' is such a difficult, risky exercise. There is so little
learned movement and so much improvisation. The choreography is
the most unique of all works I have done," said Anita Ratnam.
Aarti M Bodani, L Narendra Kumar and C A Joy who were
the other three dancers, were equally brilliant in their parts.
