ROCK AT
ITS PEAK
The
euphoria that June Rock Out has created in Chennai continues
to spread through the hearts of rock music lovers. The heat has
in fact risen at the Vineyard Center with the bands giving
the rock fans all they need and more. Last Friday, the 8th,
had Wood, from our very own Chennai and Zero, one
of the happening bands from Mumbai, give rock a new class altogether.
The evening had a tempestuous air about it, with all the powerful
music and a crowd of about 500 odd who simply went wild.
Wood,
the opening band received quite a welcome from its local fans, who
were screaming "We want Wood! We want Wood!" as soon they stepped
into the hall. The band did an amazing job with their renditions
of Megadeath, Rush, Testament and others. Their lead guitarist,
Vishwanath, was a sight to watch as his fingers flew over
the strings, to create some heavy rock riffs. Equally good performances
were given by the other band members Sunder, their lead vocalist
and drummer; Arjun, their bassist and Rehan, on the
guitars.
After
the break, came Zero to pump up the volume with a range of
tunes from plain rock to alternative to unplugged and so on. They
kicked off with songs from Led Zeplin, Pearl Jam, Jimi Hendrix
and gave a "message in a bottle" from the Police. Their
own compositions came in the form of funk rock, and then for the
unplugged version came "patience" from G 'n' R and the hit
single "love is on the way" from Saigon Kick. They then took
a turn and came back to Warren Mendosa, and what followed
was a medley of Deep Purple's "Speed king" and "Burn", the
theme from Mission Impossible, ending it with the Walt
Disney's 'boogie woogie' signature ending. A four-member band,
with so much to share, Rajeev, their lead vocalist, Girish
their bassist, Warren on the guitars and Siddharth
on the drums, who was also doing the backing vocals, did a splendid
job interacting and talking and joking with the crowd, for that
'live' touch. A total performance is what it was!
To sum it up, it was a fun nite with some great music, great people
and a lot of head banging - a total 'rock out'!
