IT'S
LIVE 1O1 AND IT'S SPECIAL!
'A
good art form speaks for itself'. Last Friday, one such art
form came from Andrea. As a modern dancer who's lately
been into a lot of contemporary dancing, she exhibited such vivacity
and versatility that had the audience on the edge of their seats,
trying to catch her every graceful move. Her performance went full
throttle right from the start with a rock song, followed by a jazz
ballet with David Pascal's live version of 'Amazing
Grace', which was just heavenly! Following which, John
Anthony joined her for Queen's 'Is this the world
we created', to which Andrea moved in perfect harmony.
Then there was an upbeat dance to Janet Jackson's 'If',
a flamenco to Donnan Murray's version of 'Have you ever
really loved a woman', followed by a sensational 'samba' with
Keith Peters on the bass and Paul Jacobs on the drums.
There were also a couple of hip-hop performances by her students.
In
the midst came the band The Banned, giving an excellent rendition
of Queen's 'Too much love will kill you', where for
the first time, Timmy, was on the keys as well as the vocals.
And guess what? Soapbox's back! Last Friday we featured
the topic 'The Indian Film Industry - More Skin, Less Skill',
to which we had a gentleman from the film industry make his point
that we definitely do have talent in Indian cinema. To prove
his point he reeled out names like Satyajit Ray, K Balachander
and so on and mentioned even 'Lagaan' to make
his point. But there arose a question, whether 'it was
demand that had created the 'more skin' concept.
After
the break came Orion's Dream to gear up the crowd with some
solid rock, followed by some jamming first with Donnan Murray,
Ranjith and Mario doing a funky blues song which was
on the spot with lyrics like 'It's time to go home' and 'I
might be back.. if you want me back'. The final performance
for the evening was a 'stand up heavy metal comedy' with members
of the band Bonesaw - Eddie, Conrad and Mark
coupled with Ameet and a friend.
It just couldn't get better. Or could it? Just wait
and see what happens next week when Thermal and Quarter with
Wood hit the stage.
LIVE 1o1 next week...
As a tribute to June Rock Out 2001, the Vineyard Center
has dedicated this month's Live 1o1 Special Nite to Rock
Music. And guess who's coming down to do the honours?
Yes! They opened up for Deep Purple in Bangalore this
April and in case you missed them; catch Thermal and Quarter right
here in Chennai!
October 1996 saw their birth. In January 1998, they went
professional with a performance at Madras Christian College. The
band with Bruce Lee Mani on the vocals and guitar, Rhzude
David on the bass and Rajeev Rajagopal on the drums have
been on MTV-U, TV-18, All India Radio and even on Star
TV in a recent appearance.
Opening for Thermal and Quarter is a band that has hogged the limelight
of late - Wood. Progressive Rock being their domain,
Wood with Sunder on the vocals, Arjun on the bass
and Rehan and Viswanath on the guitars, took the stage
by storm at the June Rock Out fest last month.
