SAMBAR AND SA-RE-GA-MA
Shakespeare
wrote - "If music be the food of love, play on".
He might have done some re-phrasing if he knew just what was happening
at Adyar. 76 year-old Meenakshi Shankar leads a 10-woman team that
makes music with kitchen utensils!
Instruments in this 'Kitchen Orchestra' include Rice Sieves, Coffee
Filters, Frying Pans and Chopping Boards. The instrumentalists include
housewives, working women and students. Some possess prior knowledge
of music. Some don't. Practice is in the member's
homes in the afternoons. Part of the repertoire is a selection of
the latest Tamil and Hindi film songs. Meenakshi Shankar, who has
also written lyrics for a couple of songs, conceived this offbeat
idea in 1954.
The Kitchen Orchestra has performed at weddings, temples and ladies
clubs. Not for money. But for the love of it.
