HAMSADHWANI
Established
in August, 1990, with the blessings of Carnatic music legend Sri
Semangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Hamsadhwani was started to nurture
and spread a treasured cultural heritage of music, dance, drama
and other performing arts.
This cultural organisation, has an enlightened membership of over
1,500, drawn from all sections of society. R. Ramachandran,
Secretary, says that the strength of the organisation comes from
its membership.
The organisation holds Carnatic music concerts by renowned vidwans
(maestros) and young talented artists. With the belief that fostering
professionalism among promising youth is of paramount importance,
it encourages youngsters by giving them a platform and an audience
for an hour or more. Hamsadhwani conducts its megavanza, every March
to May, cornering the attention of rasikas (music lovers) and musicians.
Taking its cue from the success in taking music to the doorsteps
of residents of big complexes in Adyar, Hamsadhwani has begun going
out to educational institutions as well. The organisation has taken
concerts by maestros to schools with lecture-demonstration for youngsters.
The organisation also has talks/debates during budget sessions and
important events.
Hamsadhwani's also attempts to fulfill its obligations to society;
as was evident in the mandolin concert by U.Srinivas, with
the proceeds sent to victims of the earthquake in Maharashtra.
As a step to encourage talent from abroad, by giving them a platform
under the Hamsadhwani banner, the organisation started an annual
series of NRI artist's performances in December, five years ago.
Hamsadhwani recently started a music school and already has 150
students on its rolls.
