AN INTERVIEW
WITH FLUTIST - G SRIDHAR
G. Sridhar holds the national record for his 24-hour, non-stop,
flute recital in 1991 (earning him an entry in the Limca Book
of Records). He speaks to Chennaibest.com on his music
and his incredible record.
Playing experience: Twenty years.
Inspiration:Flutist T.
R. Mahalingam.
Teachers: Kalaimamani N. Kesi
and Pallavi Venkatarama Iyer.
How
long do you practise everyday?
I used to practise for four to six hours, before. Now, I am busy
with my job. So, I practise around one hour daily.
Is the flute difficult to learn?
Yes it is. Not everyone can learn the flute. It is a wind instrument,
so to learn this, you should have good health and a lot of will
power. When you start learning, it might be days before you can
make that initial sound on the flute.
When did you decide to play 24 hours non-stop?
I felt that I had to achieve something in life. I wanted to leave
my mark. So, I thought, why not try for a world record. The thought
came totally out of the blue.
Did you practise specially before the non-stop
concert?
I just prepared the list of songs I was going to perform. I did
not work out any special practice as such.
At
any stage during the performance, did you feel the stress of such
an effort?
During the night, when I was in the seventeenth hour, my fingers
started swelling and I had some difficulty. I had good support from
my family, friends and the accompanying orchestra who encouraged
me throughout.
How did you feel after you created the record?
I was on cloud nine. Even today, the feeling that I have a world
record, has not registered fully. It still feels like a dream to
me.
Do you have any plans of breaking your record?
Nothing as of now. Probably, if someone breaks my record, I might
go for it again.
