MANI KRISHNASWAMY AT MUSIC
ACADEMY
Sangitha Kalanidhi, Mani Krishnaswamy presented a delightful
concert at the Music Academy, the only one for her this season.
One
of the authentic performers of the Musiri School, she enthralled
the audience with renditions in both the rare and the popular ragas.
The concert started with one of the rare ragas - a Varanam
in Raga Mandari. Muthuswamy Dikshitar's Mahaganapatim
was the next. The highlight of the concert was Saragunapani
in Kedaragowla. When the last line was sung, the
audience was left completely overwhelmed by the right blend of bhakti
(devotion) and laya (rhythm). As one of the members in the
audience, I unconsciously, folded my hands in reverent appreciation.
She also sang Needu Koochi and Namunala kinchi.
Nivadane gana followed next. The Aalapana for Karaharapriya
would have left even the most bitter critic fumbling for
loopholes. Purandaradasa's Vittalasalaho was the next
number. Mani Krishnaswamy wound up the concert with a Tillana
in Nagaswarali; again a rare raga.
Mani Krishnaswamy also gave ample scope for her accompanists to
exhibit their talent. Another highlight of the concert was Latha
Ramadar's skillful performance on the Kanjira. This rising
star mesmerised the audience with her dexterity, in what has usually
been a male dominated field.
Accompaniment
M.R. Gopinath - Violin
J. Balaji - Mridangam
Latha Ramadar - Kanjira
