Nestling under the shade of neem trees, on the pavement of the winding Spur Tank Road, is a display of cane furniture; from baskets to sofa sets to hammocks. The furniture here is sold by three families from Andhra Pradesh. For the past five years these families have been selling cane furniture on the pavement of Spur Tank Road.

From Rs.30/- to Rs.4,000/-, items in different sizes are available. Willow baskets, sofa sets, hammocks and glass-topped tea tables made from bamboo sell fastest. Subbaramiah who is the leader of the group says that it is the middle class families who buy the small items like willow baskets and settees. Otherwise, it is people who come in cars, who buy the cane furniture and big sofa sets for their gardens.The furniture is made in Andhra Pradesh and brought to Chennai in trucks.
