Just
a little before the 'Agro House' where the Tamil
Nadu Agro Industries Development Corporation is located,
is a sight worth stopping for. Colourful vases and pots made
from ceramic, coffee tables and coffee table décor, rows of
pottery - clay figurines and statues made from plaster of
paris and wrought iron swings. The pick of the lot - the wrought
iron swings called Jhulla in Hindi and Oonjal
in Tamil. At just Rs.3,000/- a piece, they are a real steal.
All
the items that are available here are brought from Delhi.
Eight people from Rajasthan have been at this spot for over
a year now. Ajay, one of the young men in the group,
says that business is reasonably good, though traffic and
the rains keep quite a few customers away. "It is
not that only the rich buy these wares. Even people who come
in cycles, have bought from me. Many truck drivers who come
to Guindy Industrial Estate, from other states, also buy clay
and ceramic pottery from here".
Ajay says that though he has only four swings on display,
he could get more from Delhi, given a few months. He makes
a profit of around Rs.200/- on the swings.
The coffee tables are available at Rs. 200/-, Rs. 400/- and
Rs.500/-, depending on the size. The ceramic pottery ranges
from Rs. 200/- to Rs.300/-. The pots, vases and other figurines
made from clay and plaster of paris are in the price range
of Rs. 40/- to Rs. 200/-.
