name that has become synonymous for leather over the years,
Periamet deals with purely finished leather and leather
products. Of the 50,000 companies, more than 50 % are exporters.
Periamet stretches from Central Station to Madras Veterinary
College and Traffic Commisioner's Office to Choolai.
Sheep leather, goat leather, cow leather, suede leather,
burnished leather and lining leather are the kinds of finished
leather that are available here. The leather products are
mainly exported to countries with cold climate like USA, UK
Europe and Italy. The industry is one of the major foreign
exchange earners for the country.
The
leather industry provides direct employment to more than 10
lakh persons. Daily wage earners number around 5,000 to 10,000.
The leather trade is seasonal with the exception of some products
like shoes, belts, valets, pouches and ladies handbags. Items
like leather jackets are in demand only when there during
the winter season in the countries they are exported to.
Among
the eminent personalities who have visited this market is
the former Prime Minister late Mrs. Indira Gandhi.
Mr. A. Azeez, President of the Madras Leather Merchants
Association, says that, "The MLMA which is over 20 years
old, looks after the problems of traders like Tamil Nadu Government
Sales Tax (TNGST) and pollution related problems. It basically
acts as a mediator between the traders and the government".
Periamet has several famous landmarks in its geographical
area like the Madras Veterinary College (MVC), the
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and the Ripon Building.
