Sembudoss Street had just around 50 shops when it started in the 1950's. But today, the market on this street provides direct employment to around 10, 000 people.

The shops on this street deal with Iron and Steel products like Cold and Hot Rolled Sheets, Mild Steel Plates, Iron Tubes and Pipes. These products are sourced from the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Tata Steel. Most of the shops are family-run establishments, with around 5 persons employed in each shop.

The street is abuzz with activity most of the daytime, with trucks unloading steel sheets and iron rods. F. Hassan Bai who has been on this street for over 15 years says, "Life on this street runs like clockwork".

Cold Rolled Sheets are supplied to auto component manufacturers, manufacturers of steel cupboards and racks. Sheets are available only upto 10 mm thickness. Above a thickness of 10 mm, steel is available only in plates. These plates are used for machinery in factories. Industrial plates are used for bulldozers and the ship building industry. Metal cutting tools, flexible and rigid PVC pipes, compressors, tubes, tube fittings, pipes and pipe fittings are the other products that are available here.
