The
automobile tyre market on Whites Road is more than
50 years old. What started as a market for old tyres in the
late 1940's, offers today, the latest imported tyres from
Europe and China. The market has changed not only in terms
of the number of shops, but also in terms of the quality of
service.
Today, there are more than 50 retail dealers in and around
White's Road. The dealers procure supplies from manufacturers
as well as exclusive tyre dealers (shops retailing only one
brand) who have surplus stocks. The success of the Whites
Road market can be attributed to the fact that it offers tyres
according to one's budget and choice (new, old or retreaded
ones).
In
Whites Road itself there are two exclusive tyre shops - JK
Tyres and Apollo Tyres. MRF, Ceat, JK Tyres,
Modi, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Apollo, Dunlop and Vikrant
are some of the leading Indian brands available in the
market. Pirellin, Hankook, Michelin and Kumho
are some of the foreign brands that are available. Chinese
tyres like Double Coin, Long March and Ranger
are recent additions.
A word of Caution - The customer has to be cautious
while buying. There are dealers who may pass off re- grooved
tyres (old tyres whose treads are re-grooved and painted to
look new) as new ones. Spurious makes of tubes which have
flooded the market are also sold as the product of leading
brands.
Approach: Coming past Woodlands Theatre, take the
left at Royapettah Clock tower.
