Dr C P Ramaswami Aiyar was a great statesman, responsible
for industrial and agricutural growth in Tamil Nadu and Travancore.
He was responsible for the 'Temple Entry proclamation of Travancore',
opening temples to all Hindus, irrespective of caste, for
the first time in India. He was also Chairman of various
Commissions in independent India and Vice Chancellor of Annamalai
and Benaras Universities. The C P Ramaswami
Aiyar Foundation has been inspired by the wealth of ideas,
writings and speeches on philosophy and education, which he
left behind.
Established
on the 14th of October 1966, the foundation was
started, to continue the work of Dr. C P Ramaswami Aiyar,
which was to serve the interests of the community at large
and to promote Indian culture through research and development.
Located in 'The Grove', the ancestral home of Dr C P Ramaswamy
Aiyar, the Foundation also has offices at Kancheepuram and
Damal.
The Foundation's philosophy is that, change can be brought
about through innovative and specialised education, training
and increased awareness about the Indian cultural ethos. The
Foundation aims to improve the social, economic and cultural
life-styles of diverse populations.
The Foundation does various activities through institutions
under it. The C P Ramaswami Aiyar Institute of Indological
Research, C P Art Centre, Heritage Centre, Saraswathi Kendra
Centre for Children, V G Krishnamurthy Science Centre
and the C P R Environmental Education Centre are the
various institutes that function under the Foundation.
The Foundation also publishes books in several areas like
Indian philosophy and religion, Indian history and culture
and books for children.
The
C P Ramaswami Aiyar Institute of Indological Research, which
was established in 1981 promotes research in the development
of Indian culture and history. This is done through courses
on various aspects of Indian culture and history, research
projects on Indian culture, history and society, seminars
and lectures and a reference library of books and manuscripts
on Indian philosophy and culture.
The C P Art Centre which was the first art gallery in Chennai
when it was established in 1978 has two art galleries today.
The Saraswathi Kendra Centre for Children was set up to help
children with dyslexia, specific learning disabilities, autism,
personality and behaviour disorders. It is affiliated to the
National Open School, Department of Education, Ministry
of Human Resources Development, Government of India.
The
V G Krishanamurthy Science Centre was set up to take science
to children without access to labs, where they can interact
directly with the exhibits in order to develop their spirit
of enquiry. The C P R Environmental Education Centre was established
jointly by the C P Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation and the Ministry
of Environment and Forests.
The Foundation also takes up the cause of heritage where
it does temple renovation, revival of folk art forms in schools
and the promotion of Sanksrit among other activities. The
Foundation is creating a heritage centre at Sir C P Ramaswami's
17th century house at Kanchi. The Foundation is also concentrating
on rural development and has adopted the Damal village in
Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu,. where the focus is on
income generation, health and nutrition, bio-farming and women's
development.
