Traveling along the East Coast Road is a pleasure as the reflectors, retro-reflective signboards and Cat’s Eye throughout the road length is a cynosure to the motorists who enjoy every bit of their journey.

East Coast Road at nightThe entire idea, conceived by a private firm Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC), ensures road safety and enhances user comfort. About 113 km of the road from Kudimiyandithoppu (Sholinganallur Junction) to Pondicherry outer city is a unique contractual framework wherein, maintenance of the road for a period of five years is integrated with the original improvement works. The annual maintenance is being carried out and funded by TNRDC.

The road is a joint venture of TNRDC and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO). The profit is equally shared and the project returns have been capped at 20% and any surpluses will be reinvested in road sector in Tamil Nadu.

The entire stretch has a glossy look with extensive provision of retro-reflective signboards. The pavement centerline marking and edge-line marking have been done with retro reflective paint imported from Kuwait. Moreover, guide posts with reflectors and delineators have been provided at suitable interval for the entire stretch. The delineators have been imported from Australia and reflectors from Austria.

As a step to minimize accidents taking place on the stretch, the firm has made geometric improvements and realignment of critical curves with provision of crash barriers at curves and high embankments. The curves too have traffic guideposts, Chevron Signs and High Mast Lamps specially imported from Malaysia.

Just like any other foreign countries, the firm has tied up with Apollo Hospitals for 24 hours ambulance services. Even Round-the-clock Highway patrolling facilities is available for towing vehicles that run short of fuel or develops a technical snag. What the road users have to do is to just use the help line booths set up at every 3 kms to avail the facilities.

The road has been further beautified with extensive tree plantation and transplantation of tress along with roadside arboriculture and landscaping. What else, the novel road has separate bus-bays, bus stops and passenger shelters too at various convenient points
