OPERATION CLEAN-UP

Chennai is going hi-tech. Not just in its Tidel Park or its Cyber Corridor, but also in the way it manages its garbage!

With the new CES-ONYX privatised conservancy operations, the city is on its way to becoming cleaner. Starting with Kodambakkam, Ice House, and Mylapore Corporation zones, CES-ONYX has already impressed residents with its modern cleaning techniques. The operation is mechanised, with movable bins, one-tonne autos, mechanical loaders and Bobcarts (machine to clean up sand).

This Singapore firm has been given the waste removal contract for a period of seven years. The operation has been initiated to fulfill the Mayor's pre-poll promise to improve garbage removal in the city. The company is paid, based on the amount of waste transported to the two dumping grounds (Perungudi and Kodingaiyur). The rate fixed is Rs.650/- per tonne. By handing over the operation to the Singapore firm, the city corporation saves a whopping Rs.3 crores a year.
